WHEN the Melbourne Museum’s lease on its servers expired early last year it saw an opportunity to cut its hardware costs in half.

At the time the museum, one of several run by Museums Victoria, was maintaining a battery of 60 servers to support event, retail, ticketing and collection management systems across four venues around the city.

..The organisation was also able to make the transition without losing any of its legacy applications, including a finance system that had been running on 10 servers that were more than five years old. Significant relatively easy savings can be made by looking at the legacy rack mount windows/linux servers you’ve got, taking those early Proliant/Dell servers that are more than 3 years old can quite easily be virtualized and bring not only savings in power, but your annual support contract as well.
