DatacenterDynamics Announces Event

February 12, 2007 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center industry event organizer DatacenterDynamics (datacenterdynamics.com) announced on Monday an event looking at data center energy usage called Datacentre Energy Dynamics 2007. It will be held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, England on February 28.

Very cool, I suspect they’ll be talking about the usual things, energy efficient servers, server consolidation and virtualization. Many large organizations are having problems with their datacenter space, as well as the pressure from energy costs, worth visiting to see what options there are for your business, in the short and long term.

From the datacenter perspective though:

  • How cool does your datacenter need to be? Turn up the heat by 1 degree see the enegry costs fall
  • Lights off please – set them so that they are movement activated etc
  • Replace those legacy boxes
  • Replace those kvms with integrated lights out technologies/more energy efficient kvms
  • Switch off the server screensavers if they have them

From the IT perspective:

  • Consolidate the physical servers, from older servers to newer more energy efficient ones
  • Virtualize where you can
  • Get rid of those old storage arrays – SAN attach two large drives rather than 10 old small ones
  • Get rid of physical drives if you can completely – SAN boot
  • Low power processors
  • Energy efficient network – which gets quicker as demand requires it.
