When blade servers came on the scene a few years ago they were seen as solutions for the highest demand computing environments. Turns out, not much has changed in popular perception since then. There are three pervasive myths surrounding blade servers in comparison to rack-mounted traditional servers:

  1. They cost more
  2. They consume much more power and require more cooling
  3. They run a limited subset of applications

We’re going to dispel those myths, and then show you how your organization can lower total cost of IT ownership by implementing a blade server infrastructure.

An excellent article from HP discussing the cost of blades, and it gives a real world cost example, keep in mind that although blades can use a significant amount of power and need substantial cooling, they’re consistent, it’s easier in many ways to scope out the power/cooling for 2500 blades, than 450 blades, 17 huge sun servers, 12xdl760s, and 900 various proliant servers.
