IT purchasers will soon find out exactly how serious server manufacturers are about developing a standard that allows customers to easily compare the energy efficiency of their products, after the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) last week confirmed it plans to extend its Energy Star labeling scheme to cover enterprise servers.

Just like your washing machine (but more expensive and smaller form factor), servers are now set to be graded for energy efficiency. Excellent, this will allow decision makers to more easily determine how efficient a blade is.  My only concern is that the efficiency parameters, what makes a blade rating A and not B, continue to evolve with the platform.  300 watt might be acceptable today, but in a year when power is expensive and every one seeks 100 watt, saying 300 watt is A in a year might not be accuarate.
