Datacenter planning problems (part1)

We got a posting from Bob asking for help with his datacenter/consolidation problems, here’s the first part of the response.

Blade Watch » Asset management / Datacenter Management / Good infrastructure Management

Hi bob,

Thanks for your comments, let’s start with the basics first.

One of my projects involved a large investment bank which had a mixed server environment spanning several datacenters with different databases/inventories, the key thing is to attack the problem on several levels:

* Get an inventory from the different server teams, unix/windows/datacenter planning

* Get an audit done – this can possibly be done by internal teams like operations or even the server teams when they’re security patching – they might have to visit the internet/customer facing servers get them to check the model type and asset tage

* Audit the ESX servers for which virtual sessions are running on which node

* Get the asset list together and find out what you think you should have – for example 10xDL380G1′s, 19x6500s and 4 Dec Alpha 1200s

* Agree on a central point to keep the data, for example a sql database/spreadsheet/agreed bank product like aperture

I’ll address these points over the next post or so.
