Power anyone?

http://www.internetnews.com/ent-news/article.php/3650786

The way things are going, Gartner predicts that by 2008, 50 percent of current data centers will have insufficient power and cooling capacity to meet the demands of high-density equipment.

A very interesting article about the need for ‘green computing’ at how the costs of data centers and hosting remain a key issue for the years ahead.

The main thing that companies are going to find is not so much data center space it’s the cost of power.  Getting data center space (if you’re prepared to pay for it) isn’t that big a deal, paying for the power is.

You can hedge your bets, you can purchase fixed rate until 2009, you can have suppliers bid for the supply, but ultimately it will catch up with you. With the larger compute farms being deployed, or even bcp sites, at some point the cost benefit ratio will start to come online, the key being how your infrastructure is being used, how much benefit you’re getting from your blade, virtualization and consolidation comes into play here, the more we can make a virtual infrastructure including virtual storage, the more we can keep ahead of the power and cooling costs.
