Typically an application team or business line, have an application they need to run, they know it needs a server for this, the system requirements/the memory, processors etc might not be known.

With vmware, it’s a movement towards grid, to ‘olden days’ computing, what the application needs really is for a set amount of time total commitment in terms of cpu, memory and somewhere to save some data, like the punch card system, I had 15 minutes to process my cards.

With vmware, I can have a vmware farm, you’re allocated a virtual session, this can be 2 cpus, 2gb, (or more), the esx servers are filled to the point where they run efficiently but still give good performance, and vmotion is used to move the sessions around as performance/business requirements dictate.  All you really want typically is an application server which (in particular) for your operating hours is linux with one processor and 512mb ram (for example), the hardware is irrelevant as long as it works.
