A very interesting blog entry about why vmware makes sense and discusses a few cases where this has been shown.There will always be the sceptics, but managed effectively there’s no reason why you need a physical box, tools like vmotion are there to make the day to day management of your esx servers easier.  Check out the article, well worth a read.
