Datacenter planning

In the last few years, several things happened in many of the big banks in IT. Windows 2000/2003 migration from windows nt – this caused many new servers to be bought, grid computing came along, requiring large heat/power considerations, these mixed with normal business requirements caused datacenters to reach capacity causing some of the banks to adopt new datacenter tools.

These tools have a split function, they keep the management/business sponsors involved in the datacenter capacity issues, thereby allowing decisions to be made about new projects/priorities, and enable easier management of the datacenter on a daily basis.

I do wonder though, how many datacenter planners there are secretly operating their datacenter from a simple excel spreadsheet because it works, it’s easier, it’s cheaper and more effective than a java based, or database driven management tool.

Regardless, datacenter planning for the next few years (until the low voltage/low power servers) properly come into play, and the legacy kit goes will remain a point of focus for the business sponsors/it managers of many of the large banks.
