Treowth: IBM offers Cell BE blade server – QS20
IBM have been working on a cell based blade which is meant to give great benefits in performance, the only issue with this is that it uses a modified operating system specific to cell requiring your application code to be portable on to this operating system, the blog mentions it’s going to be the QS20, and http://www-306.ibm.com/common/ssi/OIX.wss?DocURL=http://d03xhttpcl001g.boulder.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca/7/897/ENUS106-677/index.html&InfoType=AN&InfoSubType=CA&InfoDesc=Announcement+Letters&panelurl=&paneltext= shows the official statement from IBM. Often in the financial sector the applications are not easily ported to new hardware without significant investment/time. That said for grid, if the base components are available, as we move from i have an application to do a batch, to a model of, I need 400 hrs cpu time for my batch, the possibilites for cell grow.
